What is different?

I was recently asked the question:

"You have now taking a picture a day every day for six months - have you noticed anything different?"

The answer: "Yes, I have"

I find myself being more aware of my surroundings, especially the light, the patterns, the shapes, the colors.

  • I am starting to notice how the light falls on my surroundings creating the highlights and the shadows and either brings out or hides the textures.
  • I am starting to notice the patterns of nature, the patterns of architecture, and how they often interact.
  • I am starting to notice the shapes of objects, whether random, symmetrical, simple, or complex.
  • I am starting to notice how colors change throughout the day, throughout the year, and how colors interact with each other.
It is not that I have never noticed these before - but I notice that the blend of light, patterns, shapes, and colors are now more prominent in my mind. There is a difference. Ask me the question again in another six months.

Go out and 'smell the roses', take a picture, and see for yourself!

That is the Question.

Shooting with what?

So far, all photos have been taken with a iPhone 6 Plus and any editing has been with onboard editors.

Favorite phone apps:
  • Camera +: All around nice camera app with full manual or auto capabilities. Nice selection of filters and editing capability.
  • CameraPro: Similar to Camera + but I have not got the hang of it. I think Camera+ is easier and human centric. Nice set of filters and editing tools - additional filters can be purchased.
  • Camera: Best camera to use if in a hurry, seems to focus and take pictures faster. Easy to use, good burst mode, and can take panorama photos. Filters are minimal.

Favorite photo editor.
  • Camera+ or CameraPro: They seem to do a good enough job for the level of photo delivery I am aiming at.
  • Google Snapseed and Adobe Photoshop Express:  They offer advanced photo editing options. However, if I want to really get into photo editing, I will probably just transfer the photo to my personal computer where there is a little more screen real estate and additional tools.
There are a plethora of camera, editing, and artistic apps out there. The above are my goto apps at this time, but try a variety, find a few you like, stick with them, and take photographs. A least one a day!

Red Week - September 27 to October 3

I can see as time goes on that photo opportunities may come around less and less. This could be because I have traversed the same ground time and time again and have already photographed it to death, it could be weather related and I just don't get out, it could be just running out of ideas and need a new spark, and there are plenty of other 'excuses'.

There are a large variety of web sites and blogs offering photo tips and ideas to keep the spark alive. One of these mentioned having a 'Red Week'; every day, photograph something that is red.

Refer to Blog: Red Week Challenge

Flickr Album: Red Week Challenge

Here is what I came up with, all images have the color red in them:
Blood Moon

Light'er Up

Old Glory

Red Cross

Rock Chalk

Red Oxide

Red Stripe

Photo Post-Processing

You may have noticed a little more 'post-processing' of the photographs. At first I thought that I would not do any photo editing or application of filters, just use the straight photo. As mentioned in an earlier post (link), a photo may not be what your mind sees but with photo editing and judicious applications of filters one can manipulate a photo so that it does. Or at least that is what our mind will think!

Mother Nature

The other day I was out looking for Pictures of the Day. I was thinking that Mother Nature was not collaborating; the wind was blowing thus flowers were swaying and not staying in focus, clouds were coming and going stealing the sunshine and forcing 'shadow' pictures, etc.

Mother Nature always comes out on top - guess what she served up to me? A picture that would be impossible for me to find or plan. It was a wasp coming in for a landing on a flower that I just happened to be photographing. I did not even see this creature when I took the picture.

So if you are out taking photographs - enjoy the beauty, enjoy the time. You can never tell when Mother Nature will serve you a 'golden' opportunity.

For fun, I am trying various editing techniques. In this case, I wanted to make the door older and more corroded. Which do you like better, the original picture (Picture A) or edited picture (Picture B)?

Front Lighting - Crepe Myrtle

These caught my eye this morning - and an example of front lighting.

Crepe Myrtle in the Sun

Front Lighting:
"This may seem simple, but front lighting can often be a challenge to photograph. Front lighting occurs when the light source is directly behind the photographer. It can be challenging because no shadows are cast across the subject, causing the subject to appear almost two-dimensional. That lack of depth can be used to create a strong pattern across your image." LINK

New Feature - All Pictures

I have added just the pictures (no calendar day surround) to Flickr and a link to Flicker - All Pictures to the blog main page.

Enjoy

Photography - In my mind's eye

Photographs are not what we see, for a camera can not photograph what the eye sees. Photographs are what our mind sees.

A camera can never see what an eye can see. An eye has as wider field of vision, higher resolution, and a better dynamic range. (Link to article) A camera can only capture what the camera sees and we can only hope that the resulting image is what our mind sees.

Just think about it, right now. You probably can think about a picture that you have taken recently or even years ago. Even though you do not have the picture in front of you, your mind will form a picture of that image and it is very likely a better image then the one that you actually took.

Shakespeare Quote - "My mind's eye"
Hamlet Act 1, Scene 2

Hamlet:
My father—methinks I see my father—

Horatio:
Where, my lord?

Hamlet:
In my mind's eye, Horatio.

Back Lighting - Sunflowers

Sometimes shooting into the sun is difficult.

Sunflowers in the Sun

Back lighting:
"... used to hear people say, “oh, don’t shoot into the sun”, but sometimes shooting into the sun could really give your image a unique look. Backlighting is when the light source is behind your subject. Many times if there are things in the air, such as fog, mist, or even pollution, you can create dramatic images with atmospheric perspective. Unlike front lighting, this will accentuate depth and draw the viewer in." LINK

A mushroom with character.

Reminds me of the Moon

Learning to use side lighting;

"Side lighting occurs when the light source is coming from either side of the photographer. Side lighting helps to bring out textures and shapes that might otherwise go unnoticed with front or back lighting. It also helps to add depth and form to your subjects." LINK

Daily Photo?

So you thought there would be a photo a day?
I decided that would be too much overhead. I plan to post the photographs at the end of the month as a batch, collage, or a slideshow. Although I may post a photo of interest now and then.

Stay tuned.

10,001 Daily Photographs

So, it has begun. One of my long term passions is photography, my passion has been asleep for sometime. On trips, special occassions, or random times, the passion awakens for the slumber, takes a few photos, then sleeps again.

Now that I have more time, I decide to awaken the passion and see what I can do with it. I have read about 365 Photos a Day projects and similar - what could I do? If I really am passionate, I should be able to do a photo a day for the rest of my earthly life. That is quite a commitment and maybe really hard to do 'in the end'. I thought "How about a picture a day for 10,001 days?" almost 30 years. That might be more doable, thus the 10,001 Daily Photographs project and this blog.

Stay tuned.
